Choosing an online college is more than selecting a degree program, especially as online higher education continues to grow in demand. It’s discovering an educational experience that supports career advancement, busy schedules, and success. At Ƶ (ACE), our academic leaders, faculty, and curriculum experts collaborate to create a world-class learning environment that empowers working adults to thrive.

Our Student Experience Is Designed With Intention

Each course offered at ACE goes well beyond content delivery and into cultivating practical, career-centered, and relevant outcomes for students.

“At ACE, we see higher education course design like constructing a house,” ACE Vice President of Innovation and Design Jill Delcambre said. “We start with a blueprint, and our finished product is like a furnished, decorated home – a welcoming environment where our students develop the skills and knowledge needed for career advancement.”

ACE teams work behind the scenes to craft high-quality online courses that not only create an unmatched virtual learning experience but also address the needs of busy professionals seeking career advancement. At the heart of our course design is clarity, consistency, and flexibility – all components of a quality learning experience that’s brought to thousands of students globally.

Student-Centered Learning as the Foundation

What is student-centered learning? It’s an intentional effort to understand student demand and needs as an integral component of course development. To keep our instructional design student-centered and relevant, ACE courses are continuously under review. Our teams collaborate on multiple levels of development, including:

  • Creating new courses for emerging and current programs
  • Redeveloping content that becomes outdated
  • Making full, partial, and limited revisions based on student feedback and industry changes

Every update is mindfully crafted to align with licensure, accreditation standards, and industry requirements where appropriate and applicable. This ensures students are prepared for the credentials and careers they’re pursuing.

ACE’s Data-Driven Course Design Process

Before ACE creates new programs or revises existing ones, we take time to understand what our students need, as they are the central stakeholders in academic decision-making. From market research to student feedback, gathering measurable data ensures that our offerings are grounded in evidence and student demand. We then collaborate with faculty who serve as subject matter experts.

A few ways we keep our foundation student-centered include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Reviewing student comments on videos, assignments and navigation
  • Collecting and interpreting student feedback through built-in interactive surveys within courses that capture real-time experiences
  • Making data-informed decisions using retention, attrition and enrollment trends

This evidence-based approach also enables responsiveness. ACE addresses urgent course revisions at the start of each term and, when necessary, during the term to prevent disruptions to the student learning experience.

Building a Consistent, Supportive Online Learning Experience

Oftentimes, educational institutions miss opportunities to take a unified approach to content delivery, leaving students to navigate new course formats every time a class starts. ACE uses a master course shell model, creating a consistent course experience that helps students familiarize themselves with what to expect throughout their program. Students can then focus on learning rather than navigation.

Collaboration That Directly Impacts Student Success

The key to student success in online education is a team working collaboratively behind the scenes. Our leaders don’t work in isolation but rather alongside faculty subject-matter experts and our curriculum development team. This structure allows us to build content with industry leaders and leverage curriculum developers to design courses.

ACE Faculty play an essential role in keeping courses current. Their real-world expertise and direct interaction with students provide valuable insights into how content can better support learning. Faculty feedback is embedded throughout the course development process, informing adjustments to assessments, assignments, and learning activities. This ongoing collaboration ensures courses remain clear, relevant, and aligned with what students need to succeed

Designing Courses Around Real Student Needs

ACE students are often working professionals and adult learners who are seeking either career advancement or a new career path. This is why we design curriculum that is career-oriented and immediately applicable.

By understanding our students’ needs and drawing on industry trends, we develop student profiles and apply adult learning theories so that what we deliver aligns with what students are looking for. Learning objectives align with professional skills, creating career-relevant outcomes in education, business, healthcare, and nursing.

High-Quality Media and Accessible Design

From videos and infographics to multimedia materials, ACE produces original course content. Faculty-led scripts are transformed into engaging animations or presenter-based videos, enhancing course quality while improving student engagement and outcomes.

Creating our own media assets gives us more opportunities to ensure online learning is accessible, a core component of our student experience. Guided by Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards, ACE course content includes features such as closed captions, varied format options, and interactive elements that ensure every student can participate fully.

Quality Assurance That Protects the Student Experience

ACE takes pride in providing quality education, but how do we achieve this? There are multiple layers of review and revision before any course goes live, and our quality assurance is from a student’s perspective. Rigorous course audits result in fewer errors, smoother courses, and stronger outcomes. Some of these efforts include:

  • Editorial reviews for grammar, clarity, and flow
  • Technical audits to ensure all links, tools, and integrations work
  • Alignment checks between blueprints, Canvas builds, and assessments
  • Continuous, as needed, improvements outside of formal revision cycles

Operational Excellence Students Rarely See but Always Feel

Efficient academic operations and processes enable ACE teams to take proactive measures that keep courses strong, while also having protocols in place to react to issues that may arise. Our goal is to minimize student frustration caused by accessibility or technology failures within our control. For example, we employ:

  • Term-start checks and system monitoring
  • Broken-link prevention and technology support

Continuous Improvement Supports Long-Term Student Success

Technology and student needs rapidly evolve, and ACE prioritizes keeping curricula relevant and aligned with industry expectations. This means anticipating shifts and aligning our approach with them. We accomplish this through:

  • Curriculum modernization and innovation initiatives
  • Accessibility and technology enhancements

For example, we’ve redesigned the Canvas homepage for faster and easier navigation and modernized our curriculum to incorporate ethical artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

The Result: Online Learning Students Can Trust

Strong curriculum development in higher education empowers students with what they came for – applicable, career-oriented learning. ACE achieves higher retention and student satisfaction rates because our graduates feel well-prepared and equipped with practical skills. We see the results of student-centered course designs through:

  • Capstone student feedback highlighting practical application
  • Skills like organization, strategy, and real-world problem-solving

Building Confidence and Success, Not Just Courses

Excellence is a team effort, and we’re proud that our academic leadership, curriculum teams, faculty, and staff participate fully in operations aligned to our mission. Student success is the ultimate outcome of ACE’s academic ecosystem, and we take this responsibility seriously. Online learning environments offer academic leaders in higher education opportunities to prioritize the educational experience and effectively meet student needs.
